Greetings, dear visitor. This is the Reecollections space. The tiny corner that is the brainchild of some immigrant creative who also happens to be myself. But just wait one damn minute—the term brainchild does make my MO sound super smart and not remarkably chaotic. Ah well, maybe the whole balance is still a work in progress. The less explained, the better. Which begs the question: what's the point of this page?
The temptation to write this section in the third person was quite strong. That would have allowed me to be really biased while still sounding so objective and official. Like every achievement and qualification of the guy running this site should be a big deal indeed. Cool, right? But…when it's all said and done, we can all agree that introductions are inherently awkward affairs. Don't let the networking gurus fool you; there's simply no right way to unpack who you are and what you're about. Everyone sweats buckets before introducing themselves to people they care about, and I'm 100% not an exception.
Okay, fine. Here goes…
I'm Realise Mwase, aka Ree The Wordsmith. Or rather, Ree The Wordsmith is me. I happen to be a young man burdened with the desire to write and create, and this has seen me spend a huge chunk of the last 8 years or so in front of a computer screen. If we're being accurate, I'd say I've always had a passion for the written word. It certainly has made for an admittedly colorful existence. At times, I feel like an all-powerful creator, cranking out prose and poetry at will. And then there are times when I feel cursed to continue on a quixotic scribe's crusade while inspiration plays hide-and-seek with me. Anyway, let me put a pause on the poetic meditation. I'm an author, poet, spoken word artist, songwriter, screenwriter, freelance writer, acerbic pop culture commentator, and a bunch of other stuff you probably didn't sign up to hear about today.
There are a couple of books somewhere in the world with my name on the cover, in the capacity of an author. One of the books happens to be a poetry collection named African Pride, and it has garnered acclaim in its own small way since I published it way back in 2018. I also happen to be the co-founder and resident creative lynchpin of Poets On An Island, an exciting spoken word collective currently based in Cyprus. As for other accomplishments, almost successful efforts, and embarrassments, we'll get to that as you journey further down the rabbit hole that is this online space.
IN SUMMARY, I'M A WRITER AND THIS IS MY OFFICIAL WEBSITE.
Everything you will consume on this blog is the truth. Now, just because it's not real doesn't mean it's not the truth. Don't let that little technicality complicate things. I made myself and the reader a promise- to always tell the truth. In every word written, the truth ought to ring loud and sure. No pretence, no deception, no bullshitting the reader, no suppression of expression. And what's the truth? For the sake of this exercise, the truth will be honest and authentic expression. And that is what this platform will always stand for. You have my word on that, dear visitor.
The idea behind the name Reecollections is based on more than just an attempt to crowbar the shortened version of my name into branding. I mean, that's a good reason but there's more. Here, we share recollections. Memories of what was, reflections on what is, and memories we imagine ourselves creating. To do that requires more than a decent amount of honesty, creativity, and courage. It also requires research, editing, discarded ideas, rewrites, dud experiments, and reshoots (yes, there'll be videos too). In the words of Deadpool, "Maximum Effort!" After 4 years of not blogging, it's the least this writer can do for you and himself.
